How to Install an Antenna

Tower installation is done to match the elevation requirements of the antenna, so that it can have unhindered communication with the rest of the wireless network while beaming its signals all over the coverage area with adequate intensity.

Ability to take wind loads and withstand the weight of the equipment are some of the prime considerations while choosing a telecom tower design.

Type of Antenna

The mounting of the antenna and specific requirements would depend on the type of transmissions being used. Telecom antennas may transmit in VHF, UHF and microwave frequency bands, and with varying range and beam transmission power. Depending on a combination of these factors, the mounting of the equipment on the tower or mast is decided.

Mounting of the Antenna on the Tower

Once the construction of the tower is completed, it is checked thoroughly for structural stability, after which the actual mounting of equipments begin. Antennas are mounted one by one using various brackets and bolting that either come packaged in the antenna kit, or can be procured separately as accessories.

The direction of the antennas has to be carefully fixed by using an accurate compass and gauges to match the geographic design of the network.

Cabling and Grounding of the Antenna Assembly

The cabling of an antenna is done using special cables that ensure minimum loss of signal and high immunity against surrounding noise. Coaxial cables are commonly used for this purpose for their sturdiness and good quality of performance even over longer distances.

Grounding is a very important part of the electrical requirements of an antenna so as to ensure perfect reception and transmission of signals.
