Seattle Mariners Tickets – Griffey Has the Chance to Sink or Swim

Whether Seattle legend Ken Griffey Jr. was really sleeping in the clubhouse in a recent Mariners game doesn't actually matter, though it does point to a much bigger overall issue for the club and for Griffey.  With the Mariners among the very worst teams in the league in terms of scoring runs, the question now is whether or not Griffey can stay on the roster for an entire season.  Surely nobody has earned leeway more than Griffey, but it could get a lot uglier if the Mariners don't start scoring a few runs, and fast.

Even though the nap heard round the league certainly is another blemish on the Mariners' young season, it also marks a pivotal fork in the road for one of the great players in the history of baseball.  On the verge of being a punchline – if he isn't already one – Griffey has the opportunity to steer the ship in the right direction by improving his play on the field.  Though no one, including Griffey or his most loyal fans, is expecting him to come back and put up big numbers at the age of 40, a few timely hits and RBIs are really all he needs to do.  As it is, he still sells plenty of <a href="http://www.stubhub.com/seattle-mariners-tickets/">Seattle Mariners tickets</a> without doing much on the field at all.

So far this season in a relatively limited role, Griffey has struggled mightily at the plate.  His .200 average is actually one of his better stats, as he had just six RBIs and no home runs as of May 13th.  After splitting time with Mike Sweeney as the DH, Griffey has assumed a role as a late-inning pinch hitter, though he still has a major role as a team leader and will have his opportunities to contribute on the field as well the rest of the season.

For a historically great player - one who has amassed more than 600 home runs and 10 Gold Gloves - Griffey also has developed a reputation as a slow starter, particularly over the last couple of seasons.  In his final full season in Cincinnati, Griffey got off to a horrid start but still ended up belting 30 round-trippers and posting a respectable batting average of .277.  At the time, rumors were flying that Griffey was already done being a viable major league hitter, though his sweet swing eventually returned and helped him produce in the heart of the Reds' lineup.

Clearly Griffey isn't going to hit 30 home runs this season or ever again, but that doesn't mean that he's going to be a .200 hitter with no power all year.  Great players have a way of getting motivated by negativity and Griffey now has all the motivation he needs to get back to the field and produce for one more season, which almost certainly will be his last in a big league uniform.

While everyone is now assuming the nap debacle is going to be the final chapter in his storied career, not unlike Willie Mays playing outfield for the Mets or Patrick Ewing loping down the court for the Sonics, it doesn't necessarily have to be.  Griffey has paid his dues and will get plenty of opportunities the rest of this season to put together a respectable final year.  If he doesn't turn it around, though, Griffey's clubhouse snooze is what most people will remember about his return to the Emerald City.  It can't take away what he did for Seattle, but it's certainly not the way the player dubbed as The Kid wants to go out.  The irony would simply be too thick for beat writers to ignore.
